This post is going to be 8 pages long so please be patient with me and get ready with your pen and paper. Are you a makeup lover? Are you a makeup artist? Do you want to dive in the world full of beautiful colors? But ouch! Makeup costs bomb.Today we are going to discuss How to Build your Complete Makeup Kit on Budget.
For those of you who don’t know ,I am a professional makeup artist and a pass out from Namrata Soni School of makeup & hair. When I was just starting out, building a makeup kit with a limited budget was like finding a needle in a haystack. So, today we are going to discuss how to built that complete makeup kit with your limited resources.
Anyways, I searched for hours and hours & finally I am able to give you my product list consisting of affordable alternatives of your higher end luxury buys.
I have been getting extremely busy these days & for that, I am sorry for the lax in posting. This time I have made a promise to myself that from now on, I would be careful enough to post on a regular basis.
I would be listing out products categorically –
Skin prepping products
- Moisturizers, Facial Oils
- Lip Scrub
Face makeup :
5. Loose Powder/ Translucent Powder
Eye Makeup :
8. Eyeshadow Primer
9. Powder Eyeshadow
10. Creme Eyeshadow
11. Kohl pencil or Colored Eye Pencils
13. Gel Eye Liners
14. Eye Lash Curler
15. Brow Products
16. Additional Items
17. To be pout pretty you need killer lip shades, right ladies? Well Instead of buying several lip colors I would definitely suggest to invest in Anastasia Lip palette which is a total game changer.
It has all the primary colors and depending on your needs you can create any color under the sun. Suppose you want your pink to have more warmth- just add a pinch of yellow from the palette.
Is your nude not pastel enough? Adding a bit of white would solve the woe. Endless options in front of you.
So starting off with skin prep products.
I have some serious mental disorder when it comes to skin. I feel if your skin work is good half the battle is won. So as a makeup artist’s point of view, skin prepping is the MOST important business.
Biotique Morning Nectar
One of the most amazing affordable finds till date & I have used it on innumerable people & never seen anyone reacting adversely to it.
I would say do not skimp on this one. You might end up giving acne to your clients. And please please do not use Johnson Baby oil as a mean to moisturize the skin. It is totally mineral oil based, meaning it would just sit on top of the skin making it look oily and would not nourish the skin.
A. I highly highly recommend Indulgeo Rose Gold Essential oil which is such a boon for me. Gets easily absorbed making your foundation glide on much smoother.
Free from any harmful ingredients and guess what? Contains 24 Karat gold flakes.
It is not a budget option at all- 15 ml of small bottle costs you 1280 INR but definitely worth it.
P.S Never use this oil if you are going out in the Sun or doing outdoor shoots. Since this oil contains essential oils, it can give you sunburns easily.
B. Another great find is The Ordinary Rosehip Oil
It is very cheap but not available in India. You have to get it ordered from international websites or some Instagram seller so it would be not as cheap as it is supposed to be.
Primers create a barrier between your skin and makeup thus protecting the skin. It also smoothens the skin texture and helps with the longevity of makeup.
Some primers fill in your pores while some color corrects, while some work as skin hydrants.
In the budget option category you would not find too many options still I would name a few.
A. Nivea After Shave Balm for Sensitive skin( Price: 235 INR). This is discovered by the famous youtuber NikkieTutorials and its a spot on! When it doesn’t do anything with the hydration or making your skin look smoother, but it holds the makeup for hours. It’s for men but we ladies can also use this one 😀
A definite must-have when you are on a budget.
B. THE ORDINARY High-Spreadability Fluid Primer
It is a Korean brand and it’s extremely affordable
Availability : available at cosmetic love. Follow the link here to purchase this amazing product
My favorite affordable foundation. It has no SPF so photographs beautifully. Despite their low price point, L’oreal is one my favorite makeup brands and their innovation is just out of the world.
• Finish: Demi Matte
• Long wearing
• Extensive Shade Range
Price: 1400 INR
** Jabong, Nykaa gives awesome deals on L’oreal makeup so always grab it during their sale period.
Must have shades for Indian skin tone: 140, 200, 320
B. L’oreal Paris Infallible Total Cover Foundation ( Full Coverage)
Those of you who want full coverage, this stuff is magic. The best part is, it never looks cakey. The trick is to blend, blend, blend or mix it with little moisturizer or a lighter weight foundation.
∗ Finish: Demi Matte
∗ Coverage: Medium- Full
∗ Very limited shade range and lack of shades with warm undertones make it extremely difficult for me to recommend shades. Personally, I have tried shade number 309 on a client which worked decently.
C. The Ordinary Coverage Foundation:
It is by the company Deciem and they have shown the world that affordable products can be good as well. I am currently trying The Ordinary Alpha Arbutin & quite impressed by the result.
With just 6$ you cant ask for more. Surely give it a try and see if you like it.
P.S It contains Coconut Alkanes which might cause breakouts to sensitive/ acne prone skin.
Finish: More towards dewy
Coverage: Medium – Full
Shade range: Extensive
D. Maybelline Fit Me Foundation
One of the most affordable foundations yet one of the bests in the Indian market. Very good shade range gives medium buildable coverage which looks very natural.
Finish: Semi Matte
Coverage: Medium buildable
Shade Range: Good
E. Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum Foundation( Ideal for people with good skin )
How come Bourjois come up with such limited shade range for this foundation? If the shade range were good I tell you, this one is hands down one of the best foundations in the market without the hefty price tag.
Finish : Natural Dewy
Coverage : Light- Medium
When I was starting out, it was the most difficult task for me to find a kick a** concealer without burning a hole in my pocket. Now drugstore brands have improved on their formulas a lot and we have quite a good options available today.
A. Maybelline Fit Me Concealer
I treat it as a dupe of Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer ( My favorite)
B. Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Concealer
It has such a cult following and now available at Nykaa. Personally, I havn’t tried it but heard great reviews.
C. If you are a makeup artist you must have Dermacolor Concealer in your professional makeup kit. Even if you only use high- end products, you must get this bad boy in order to get your professional work done.
Availability: Kryolan Stores
5. Translucent Powder
A. Maybelline Fit Me Loose Finishing Powder
Probably the best drugstore loose finishing powder in my opinion. Too sad that it is not available in India yet. If you have any relative staying in the US ask them to bring it for you or else you can rely on Insta sellers.
B. Kryolan Translucent Powder
Not a personal fan of this product but a good budget-friendly option.
C. RCMA No Color Powder
Considered to be the dupe of the oh so famous Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder
A fantastic Product
A. Morphe 9B Blush Palette
One of the nicest palettes in the market which I still use despite having my higher end blushes.
Extremely pigmented and blends like a dream.
B. Makeupgeek Blushes
I love love love the formula. Easily comparable to high- end blushes I have tried in the past.
This is what I have in my personal makeup kit.
C. Nyx High Definition Blushes
Highlighters are two types – Liquid & Powder.
Liquid highlighters can be used in different ways- mixing with your foundations, alone on top of your cheekbones or you can layer it with powder highlighters as well.
For the budget options, I would go for
A. Makeup Revolution Liquid Highlighters
This one is considered to be the dupe of Covefx Custom Enhancer Drops
B. L’oreal Paris Magic Lumi Primer
Fabulous creation by the house of L’oreal . Excellent as an illuminating base or you can add this with your foundation in order to make you look healthily glowy ( does this even make sense?)
It gives a subtle glow, not something over the top or glittery.
C. Nyx Born to Glow Illuminator
A. Milani Strobe Light Instant Glow Powder
B. Makeupgeek Highlighters
C. Physician’s Formula Shimmer Strip All in One Custom Nude palette- Shade : Warm Nude
I am a die-hard fan of this product. When you want to add that subtle glow without going gaga over your highlighters this baby should be your pick.
Though I use high-end makeup brands now, I still have it in my kit and it secures a permanent position there.
You can use the 3rd and 4th-row colors as bronzers as well.
D. Sleek Highlighting Palette ( Shade: Solstice)
If you want that VA VA VOOM highlight, then this palette is your bff.
8. Eyeshadow Primer
to keep your eyeshadow in place you have to use a primer. Generally, I prefer using an eyeshadow primer which not only keeps your shadow in place but also color corrects your eyelids so that eyeshadows pop.
A. Maybelline Color Tattoo
These are considered to be an exact dupe of MAC Paint Pots.
The shade Creme de Nude would work as an excellent eye makeup primer and it is a dupe of MAC Paint Pot in the shade Soft Ochre.
B. Nyx HD Primer
9. Powder Eyeshadows
A s a beginner for powder eyeshadows, it is always advisable to invest in affordable palettes.
My top picks would be
A. Zoeva Cocoa Blend Palette
Whether you are on a budget or not you have to have this palette in your life. I cannot imagine any of my bridal work without this.
B. Morphe 35 N ( Every Matte shades imaginable available in here)
C. Morphe 35F & Morphe 350 S Shimmer Palette
10. Creme Eyeshadows
Creme eyeshadows have to be there in your kit if you want your eye makeup to have that luminosity . It also makes your eyeshadows last much longer.
A. Maybelline Color Tattoo Creme Eyeshadows
B. L’oreal Infallible 24 Hour Eyeshadow
11. Kohl Pencil or Colored Eye Pencil
A. For the blackest of black kohl Lakme Absolute Kohl is the BEST I have come across so far.
The texture is super creamy, when smudged gives you that smoldering kohl look.
B. Sugar Stroke of Genius Heavy Duty Kohl
C. L’oreal Kajal Magique Bold
Full Review Here
D. For Colored eye pencils
L’oreal Paris Infallible Silkissime Eyeliner can be your choice. After some time it settles down so it wouldn’t budge the whole day.
Full Review : Here
• Tweezer ( I use one from Pro Arte 240 INR)
• Makeup Setting Spray
I recommend 2 setting sprays here.
A. Milani Make it Last setting Spray
B. L’oreal Infallible Makeup Extender Setting Spray
P.S Most of the Images taken from Google and two images are clicked by me
